Disaster Recovery for Home Computers
A lot of people ask about recovering files & backing up data on their home computers. Now during Hurricane season you should all look at doing backups of your data and moving them somewhere like a safety deposit box or home safe that you can swipe up and take with you. I prefer the second method, which requires me using an external hard disk to capture all of my backup files. This process is a lot easier than you think whether you own a PC or a Mac, especially with built in tools for doing just what you want to do. Simple windows file backup for Windows clients will surpise you with how robust it can be with saving you in case of a disaster.
Using windows file backup, you can backup documents, pictures, files & even system settings of your computer. I use this backup methodology at home, backing up pictures to my network attached storage hard disks as flat files – meaning all of the files I want to backup as one single file. This file can be referenced during a ‘windows restore’ using the same built in tool for Microsoft Windows. You can then pick and choose which files you wish to recover. I do backups weekly on my pictures since I am taking so many as of late. You can follow the below method to ensure you have data redundancy.
- Backup from PC to NAS (flat file)
- Backup to External USB Harddrive (flat file)
- Move Harddrive into Home Safe (flat file)
- For Pictures you can upload them to various online photo sharing sites like Flickr or Snapfish. Both of these sites have size limitations so you might need to purchase a membership.
- Burn DVD’s of Pictures, Files, even ‘flat file backups’ (if they are small enough) & store somewhere other than your home.
You do not need a home NAS to do these backups, you can go straight from your home PC to the external USB drive and then disconnect it and move to step 3 if you wish.
Check out the article at Lifehacker today that covers a few of these topics, as well as recovering wrongfully deleted files. I don’t know if any of you have ever looked at some of the links on the right side of the page, but there are a few cool sites there if you’re looking to just browse the web!
So next time you save all those precious pictures, or finish that long paper make sure you make the time to back them up!!
new digital camera
Leslie & I purchased a new digital camera this weekend, the Canon Rebel XTi SLR. I’ve only snapped a few photos with it over the weekend, but so far I love it. I’ll try to get some pics up on the website soon so you can see what I’ve been using as a test subject. I’ll give you a few hints: he has four legs and loves long walks.
We bought the camera so we can take some quality pictures once the baby is born, and I’ve personally been wanting to get a better camera for quite some time now. We have a nice point-and-shoot, a Canon Powershot 650 which is a great little camera. But this camera does have its limitations, which is why we purchased the SLR.
If you own this camera and have any tips, let me know!
