LSU Headed to Omaha

After an impressive performance this past weekend against Rice, the 2009 LSU Tiger baseball team has punched their ticket to Omaha.  It appears that the Tigers are setting up for their 16th appearance in Rosenblatt stadium, hoping to bring home championship number six.  That’d be awesome to raise the banner the first year of the new stadium.  Remember, you can use this handy dandy bracket to follow all the coverage!

LSU vs Rice

LSU Baseball faces off against Rice today at 1:00pm CST in an elimination game in the College World Series.  The game airs on ESPN2, so tune in and cheer for the Tigers!  If the Tigers win today they play again on Thursday at 7:00pm CST, if they lose then they head home.

GEAUX TIGERS!

Nailbiter at the Box

I do not know about you, but I am recovering from a stressful weekend of being a fan of LSU baseball.  I am not talking about ‘who is going to QB the Tigers next year’ stress either, I’m talking about jumping off the couch wondering who gives birth to umpires stress.  Their 23 game win streak came to an abrupt and unfortunate end at the hands of the Anteaters on Saturday.  It seemed that no matter how much momentum the Tigers built up it seemed the umpires were ready to take it away.  In a controversial ‘hidden ball’ routine, LSU lost momentum in the game and never seemed to recover.

Sunday was turning out to be chapter two in the Irvine book of taming the Tigers, as a gold jersey LSU team could not put enough run distance between their east coast visitors.  A six run inning in the fourth put tiger fans on the edge of their seats, as the pitching from Irvine seemed on cruise control in the 92 degree heat.  But the ghosts of Alex Box had something else to say about it in the top of the ninth inning.  The Tigers rallied from a 7-2 deficit using base hits and walks, a testament to small ball that this Tiger team seemed to embrace.  The bottom of the ninth started with LSU on top 9-7, giving the Anteaters three outs to close the door on Alex Box forever.  Pitcher Louis Coleman for LSU closed the game in a 4 up 3 down inning and forced a third game tonight, the last game to be played in the Box.

As a side story, I think Camryn is good luck.  I picked her up in the bottom of the 8th and started to talk to her about how important the game was and that she needed to pull for them as the ninth inning started.  Go figure, I got a good luck charm on my hand!

The game on Sunday was honestly one of the best college games that I have watched in a very long time.  Center fielder Leon Landry and right fielder Jared Mitchell have both made some fantastic acrobatic catches in the outfield, and UC Irvine has suprised me as a very formidable opponent.  Seeing Nick Pontiff come up to bat gave me goosebumps, and it was an awesome move in my opinion to really keep the crowd crazed.

The Tigers play Game 3 tonight at the Box and it will mark the last game in this historic stadium built in 1938.  Lets hope that they can carry that special ninth inning swagger into tonight’s bid for Omaha.

Tune in at 6:00pm on ESPNU (Channel 321 on Cox ‘New Orleans’)

Congrats

to the LSU Baseball team for winning the NCAA Baseball – Baton Rouge Regional last night against USM.  The LSU Baseball team really turned this season around, and it’s unbelievable that they are headed to a Super Regional after being 11th in the SEC near the middle of the season.  The Tigers also cruised to their 23rd winning game in a row, which is a new SEC record.

The Tigers will face off against the University of California Irvine ‘Anteaters’.  The best-of-three series begins either Friday or Saturday for the right to advance to the College World Series.

With this being the last season in Alex Box stadium on the LSU campus, would’nt this be a great good bye with a national championship?  Tune in and cheer on the Tigers!
