Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5

For quite some time there has been a discussion about what Microsoft will do to close in on the market that the Apple pulled away with during the iPhone’s reign as champion…

One Phone for Work and Play

Windows phones are ideal devices for work and play, giving consumers the confidence to get things done with mobile versions of the software they recognize and expect from their PCs. The redesigned Internet Explorer Mobile browser includes a new engine and built-in Adobe Flash Lite support for better rendering and completion of tasks, so it’s easy to do more from a phone, such as check in for a flight, get directions or pay bills while on the go. Microsoft Office Outlook Mobile delivers a familiar, consistent e-mail experience across the PC, phone and browser, while Microsoft Office Mobile allows customers to open and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents right from their phone. With Windows Live on their phones, users can keep track of friends in one place, no matter which social networking sites they belong to — Facebook, Twitter or MySpace Windows Live.

Powerful Mobile Services

Windows phones will debut with two new powerful mobile services so that the information, contacts and applications customers want are always at their fingertips. A wide variety of approved and certified applications will be available for direct download to Windows phones from Windows Marketplace for Mobile, and an easy return policy lets customers buy with confidence. The free My Phone service allows customers to automatically back up and sync photos, music, contacts and text messages from their phone to the Web, making it easy to access and manage them from their phone or PC or restore the information in the event of a lost phone.

A Customized Experience, From Keyboards to Widgets

Windows phones give consumers the choice of a broad selection of form factors from sleek, touch-screen devices to full QWERTY keyboards to make it easy to find a phone that fits their needs. Windows Mobile 6.5 provides easy access to third-party applications such as Facebook, Netflix and Zagat, and an improved, touch-friendly user interface that allows customers to tailor their phone to suit their individual style. With the new version, users can change the look and feel of their phones with designer themes or a personal background and customize their home screen with widgets so the information they need is always easy to find.

Windows 7 Beta

Microsoft Windows 7

Microsoft Windows 7

Steve Ballmer (Microsoft CEO if you did not know) has released information that Windows 7 Beta will be available for Free Download this Friday.  Click here for the full story.  If you want to get a look at Microsoft’s latest operating system, have a spare PC lying about, and do not mind tons of bugs then give it a try!

Also known as Blackcomb and Vienna, Windows 7 proves to be more stable & faster than Windows Vista.  Windows Vista is looking more and more like Windows Millenium Edition was for Windows XP.  Meaning Vista was just a hurried release and now Windows 7 is Vista patched & proper.  Thanks for all the laughs Microsoft!

Windows SkyDrive

Windows Live SkyDrive

Need a place to store those important photos, documents or whatever files you want to access from anywhere?  Maybe Windows SkyDrive’s new 25GB offer would meet your needs?  Currently the space they provide is 5GB, so this is a substantial increase.  Please realize this is an announcement so things might change, but just in case you’re looking for online storage this might be your gig.  Remember, backing up is a good thing to do

You can get to the SkyDrive homepage by clicking here.

MCTS Exam

Turns out I still got some brains left in me, I managed to pull off a passing grade for a Microsoft Certification Exam (70-236) this morning. As a matter of fact I scored very well, and became MCTS for Microsoft Exchange. Translation – I’m certified on Microsoft’s Email Server Software.

I know one thing that I cannot do is stay up and pull all nighters studying. Now to take on their advanced certification track, which is two more tests. Wish me luck!

Think I’ll have a celebratory drink this evening…

Microsoft Photo Story 3

Sick and tired about hearing how easy it is to make a movie out of your pictures on a Mac?  Try Microsoft Photo Story 3.  You can put together images, add your own commentary, add your own music or MP3 and put it all to a list of formats.  Time to put all those pictures of you in the Magnum P.I. costume to music don’t you think?

This software reminds me a little of Windows Movie Maker, but really really simplified.  Look for Windows Movie Maker on your Windows XP or later PC if you want to get into making your own videos but do not want to pay tons on software.  It is a great piece of software to start with and does not force you to break the bank.

NADD Mad

I blamed Mozilla Firefox, now I blame Internet Explorer 7.  About what you ask?  About feeding my NADD of course, that’s what!  I mean who thinks someone with Nerd Attention Deficit Disorder (NADD) can manage different websites within one browser using tabs.  I remember installing Mozilla for the first time and going bananas at the thought of browsing multiple webpages at the same time.  I’ve already browsed away from writing this blog post two times.  Make that three…
I just think that this type of technology feeds into the ‘cannot get enough stimulation’ sickness that plagues geeks like me.  Right now I’ve got the website open, a Symantec window, a CNN window, an ESPN window, and a Gmail window open.  I can’t read all that at once, or can I?  I end up reading snippets of one site, then clicking a new tab and reading another then rinse repeat.  I find myself really wondering why I opened certain tabs, opening tabs of other websites inside of tabs.  I see tabbed browsing in my sleep.  I stare at the window wondering what the other webpages are doing…

I really honestly enjoy the technology, because it completely beats having nine different browser windows open at one time when you are trying to surf the web.  With all the new website technologies popping up daily, it is good to know that I can experience them all in multiple tabs as I incessantly click from one to the other reading headlines and quick bylines.
Sorry If I totally went over your head just now, but you should download Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox.  If I still went over your head and you have either product then shame on you.  You should especially upgrade if you are still running earlier versions of Internet Explorer ( Version 6 or earlier).  The security risks you run to your computer are high if you are running an early browser.  I use both browsers daily and find Firefox to be the better of the two, until it comes to some Adobe Flash content.

Head here to download recent updates to your Microsoft Windows computer (unless you are on your work PC which I suggest you never apply any updates without consulting your IT department).  These updates could take some time so make sure you have some time to spare.  It will not require active input, but will tie up your PC for a while.  Internet Explorer 7 is included as an update.

Download the latest version of Mozilla Firefox here.
Thanks once again Mozilla for branding technology that feeds my NADD!
