Helpdesk?

It’s not too often I vent about computer related things on here because most of the things I work on do not make for good converstation.  I mean, how often does one want to hear about Windows Clustering, or Veritas Netbackup issues?  It makes for no good tale to talk about either of these topics.  I usually vent to other buddies I have made on the Internet that also work in the I.T. field, which normally turns into a discussion of geek preportions so I’ll save you the headache.

It’s kind of like when Leslie asks me how my day went, and I just can’t reply about some stupid printer that just wouldn’t duplex or that machine that kept pulling the wrong ip address.  I usually just save us both the headache and say ‘It was alright.’

People love to call me with computer problems or even technology problems, like which iPod is the best? Or LCD or Projection?  Or should I get the 150 or 500GB drive?  I don’t mind these calls although people must think that I do because they always precede what they say with, ‘Sorry to bother you with this.’  I don’t mind being the person that people bounce technology purchase ideas off of, because personally these salespeople can definitely send you down the wrong road.  I’ve seen people buying things in Bestbuy, Circuit City, stores like this and wondered to myself ‘Do they really need that?’  I saw one guy get talked into an HD camcorder when he was looking at a point and shoot Canon camera.  We’re talking $500 upsale here.  So before you make that purchase, ask yourself if you really need it.  It’s like I’ve said before, everyone can’t have a nerd with them when they shop.

Antennae… Antennas… Whatever…

In about 13 months all analog signals will cease, what does that mean to you?  It means that bunny ear antenna you have on your television set will be nothing more than nostalgia if you are currently using one.  On February 17, 2009 all tv stations will cease to broadcast their analog signal, after which they will broadcast in digital only. Viewers who receive their signals through an antenna instead of cable or satellite and don’t have a digital-ready TV will have to buy a converter.  Many companies are stewing over the possible demand of digital-ready TV converters, and imagining much demand over this.   Amazingly to me, the Nielsen Co. estimates that 14.3 million households rely on over-the-air television broadcasts for programming.

These converter boxes are expected to cost between $40 and $70. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration is going to take requests for 2 $40 coupons per household to be used toward the purchase of these boxes.  The current link for the coupon seems broken.

In my opinion this will boost the sale of Satellite television immensly for those with hunting camps or remote locations where Cable companies cannot provide installation.  Stores like Circuit City & Best Buy are sure to reap the benefits from this upgrade also.
